A Dominatrix — also called a Domme, Dom, Madame, Goddess, Mistress, or Dominant Mistress — is a woman who takes the dominant role and takes charge and initiates activities in consensual BDSM practices as opposed to a person who assumes the submissive role and undergoes the wishes, requests, and demands of the Dominatrix. The submissive person — also called the Sub — may involve an individual identifying with any gender or sexual orientation.

The dominant role is also known as the top role, and the submissive role is also called the bottom role. Mind that both the dominant and submissive person in BDSM Play may mutually enjoy the activities (and in some cases can take either the one or the other role interchangeably), that is, the Domme may enjoy giving orders and taking charge, while likewise the submissive person may enjoy receiving and fulfilling the Domme’s requests.

However, in other cases, an individual may rather be comfortable with or inclined to taking either a dominant or a submissive role, typically for their own pleasure or for the pleasure of the other, or perhaps for financial compensation in commercial BDSM practices.

In the professional sphere, that is in commercial dominatrix or female domination services (aka Femdom services), a Dominatrix is commonly called a Pro-Domme — also written Prodomme — which simply means a Professional Domme.

Usually, a Dominatrix is associated with carrying out sexual BDSM practices — which in the Prodomme sphere is considered sex work — but it’s important to note that sexuality and eroticism are certainly not necessarily (the only) part of female domination activities. Moreover, if sexual play is involved it’s rather exceptional that a Prodomme would offer Happy Endings or sexual intercourse, meaning that Prodommes should not be equated with prostitutes.

Dominatrices may perform a broad range of acts and roles with regard to the submissive counterpart, which may include practices like inflicting physical pain (whipping, flogging, caning, pinching, and so on), erotic/sexual and non-erotic humiliation and punishment (for instance, painful stimulation of the genitals, boot-licking done by the Sub, verbal insults, the submissive performing humiliating tasks), financial domination (Findom), Tease & Denial, and/or applying physical restraints (bondage through chains, ropes or cuffs, or using blindfolds, etc.), to name a non-exhaustive list of options.

Domination i.e. Femdom activities are often combined with role play, medical play, fantasy play, massage, costume play (i.e. cosplay), and/or kink & fetish play. However, mind that these latter activities may also be part of completely other types of treatments such as Girlfriend Experience (GFE), Sensual Erotic Massage, Roleplay Massage & Bodywork, Body De-Armoring, Somatic Sex Coaching, or Emotional & Trauma Release, without having any BDSM connotations.

Nevertheless, it’s fairly common that Prodommes not only perform domination activities, but also offer other types of services like various types of Sensual Erotic Massage, BDSM training, GFE experiences, or escort services, to give some examples.

Prodomme sessions may be carried out incall — at the Prodomme’s studio or in a BDSM Dungeon, or alternatively outcall at the submissive’s home or hotel room. The advantage of incall services is that the Prodomme would have a variety of equipment and furniture readily available and “installed,” such as “torture” devices, a Milking Table, cages, a range of different types of whips, cuffs, sex swings, spreader bars, chains, cock rings, and costumes, to give some examples of what could be used in a domination session.

Of course, there are likewise portable versions of equipment and furniture, but obviously a Prodomme can only carry a limited number of things to the receiver’s place, making outcall services somewhat more limited.

In addition to incall and outcall domination services, it’s increasingly common that dominatrix sessions are also conducted online through telephone, internet chat, sexual subscription services, or punctual live video i.e. webcam sessions, and so on.
