In this article, we discuss Temperature Play and Wax Play in its practice as part of BDSM, kink, and fetish activities.
Temperature Play can be a form of BDSM Play or alternatively sexual foreplay, and involves objects and substances that are heated or cooled and brought into contact with a person’s body for a sensual effect.
Substances used may vary widely and can include water, ice, flames, hot melted wax, hot oil, and foods such as chocolate sauce, marmalade, whipped cream, melted butter, cold fruits, and hot, steamy vegetables.
Objects can include almost anything that can be made hot or cold, such as sex toys, tableware, radiators, chains, tools, and so on.
Temperature Play, which is actually a form of Sensation Play, is often combined with bondage and sensory deprivation practices to intensify the sensual effects.
However, Temperature Play can be quite risky, and safety precautions are advised, including the availability of first aid materials, fire extinguishers, burn creams, and wet towels.
Wax Play in a BDSM, kink, or fetish context is a form of Temperature Play in which hot wax from a candle is dripped onto a person’s naked body to induce a burning, often slightly painful sensation.
If done in an uncontrolled way, the activity can be risky because burns may be deep and cause injuries and wounds.
There are different types of candles that can be used, including soy, beeswax, stearin, and microcrystalline candles, each having another melting point and hence also different temperatures of wax.
After the play, wax may be difficult to remove, but then again, removing wax can become part of Knife Play.
Wax Play can also be integrated in an Erotic Candle Massage in which the hot wax melts into warm, moisturizing massage oil to be used to massage a person. In this case, Wax Play is not meant to be part of BDSM, kink, or fetish activities, but rather a form of Sensual Erotic Massage.
Mind that in the case of a massage session, the candles used are developed to melt at lower temperatures compared to standard candle wax and are thus safer in avoiding unpleasant heat or burns.
