Denial Play in an erotic sense is a sexual activity during which sexual satisfaction — typically a sexual orgasm — is delayed or denied, usually with a goal of increasing erotic or sexual arousal and/or sexual tension for the person who undergoes the “treatment.”

Delay or denial practices commonly take place in dominance and submission play in which sexual gratification is delayed or denied for the submissive person. Apart from increasing sexual excitement and sexual tension for the submissive partner, Erotic Sexual Denial Play is likewise a typical BDSM “control” activity from which both the submissive and dominant partner can derive pleasure.
There are various forms of Sexual Denial Play, such as Tie & Tease, Tease & Denial, and Edging & Orgasm Control.
Tie & Tease includes bondage techniques to restrain the person who’s denied sexual gratification (for instance, by using cuffs, chastity equipment, or harnesses), rendering them in a totally helpless position to come to sexual relief by themselves. The practitioner would typically stimulate i.e. “tease” the genitals and other erogenous parts of the submissive partner, but only up to a certain point, one that’s usually unsatisfactory for the receiver.
Tease & Denial may also include bondage activities, but it’s rather specifically focused on sexually stimulating a person until they are close to a sexual orgasm, while stopping the stimulation just at that point to keep the person on the “edge” of an orgasm. Hence, this activity is also known as “Edging.” Receivers are usually repeatedly teased to the point of an orgasm, thereby increasing feelings of intense sexual arousal and the need of gratification.
Edging & Orgasm Control — in this specific combination — is in a lesser degree a “tease” situation, but rather carried out to prolong sexual pleasure. It’s about bringing a person to the “edge” of an orgasm but without letting them have an orgasm, with the goal of having an extended sexual pleasure experience.
In addition, Edging & Orgasm Control may also be a form of therapeutic bodywork in which the receiver is taught to control their orgasm, for instance, to combat premature ejaculation in order to have a sexually satisfying experience for both partners. It may also be applied as a technique in so-called semen retention practices, which can have a variety of aims, such as increasing energy and longevity or resolving/alleviating physical, emotional, and/or spiritual disorders and dysfunctions.

Mind that in all types of the aforementioned forms of Sexual Denial Play (i.e. Tie & Tease, Tease & Denial, Edging & Orgasm Control), the activity may finally end in a sexual orgasm for the receiver or it may not, depending on the agreement between the partners. However, in so-called Total Denial Play, sexual stimulation of the genitals is absent, which — although sexual arousal may be experienced — makes it unlikely that the receiver will come to an orgasm.
Erotic sexual denial play sessions may be carried out privately between couples in the bedroom or in a private Dungeon, or alternatively in a commercial BDSM setting carried out by a professional Domme (female) or Dom (male).
It’s not uncommon that sensual erotic massage practitioners also offer sexual denial play sessions combined with a massage treatment. These types of massages go under several labels, such as BDSM Massage, Tie & Tease Massage, Fantasy & Roleplay Massage, or Kinky & Fetish Massage, among others.
