In BDSM, kink, and fetish practices, bondage is the activity of tying, binding, or restraining another person for erotic, sexual, artistic, aesthetic, and/or physical-sensual stimulation. Sometimes, bondage is also used for therapeutic purposes, that is, for profound emotional and trauma release.

A person can be physically restrained or bound in various ways, which may include the use of rope, chains, cuffs, household items, shawls, belts, stockings, spreader bars, straps, harnesses, and/or bondage tape, and such.

The body or limbs of the restrained person can be tied to an object, such as a chair, massage table, or bondage table, alternatively the body may be suspended, or it may be restricted of specific movement.

Mind that the surrender of control by the submissive partner is voluntarily, with mutual understanding and with full consent.

Bondage may be carried out as a goal in itself or it may be used as a part of sex, as a therapeutic modality, part of an erotic or non-erotic massage treatment, or integrated in sadomasochistic practices, or simply being applied in combination with other BDSM activities such as impact play, fantasy and roleplay, or sexual denial play, and so on.

There are many types, specializations, positions, and styles of bondage, which include activities and practices such as rope bondage, breast bondage, limb bondage, “mummification,” Japanese Shibari and Kinbaku, decorative/aesthetic bondage, torture bondage, or meditative/spiritual bondage, to name some.

Typically, both the dominant and submissive partner gain erotic, sexual, visual, or sensual pleasure from the restrained partner’s submission and the feelings of helplessness, vulnerability, and the transfer of control and power.

In the case of sadomasochistic practices, bondage is rather used as a means to an end, that is, used to exercise sadomasochistic activities on the restrained partner.

Bondage practices are not uncommon in the sex lives of couples, and can be carried out as a sex game, sexual fantasy, for sexual arousal, sexual teasing and denial play, or as sexual foreplay.

After being bound, the restrained person may be sexually stimulated by masturbation, manual sex, oral sex, a vibrator, sexual intercourse, or other sex acts. The dominant partner may find erotic pleasure or sexual arousal in being in control.

Mind also that bondage can be a commercial practice, carried out by a BDSM professional such as a Dominatrix. In this case, bondage is rather carried out for the sole pleasure of the submissive (paying) client.
