As a general rule — even if you thoroughly understand the possible differences — it’s always still important to double-check on the descriptions of the massage offerings and not to take these terms for granted. Moreover, none of these labels point to the type of massage that will be given.

The actual type of massage offered may vary significantly and can, for instance, involve Swedish Massage, Thai Massage, Sports Massage, Sensual Oil Massage, Sensual Erotic Massage, Lomi Lomi Massage, or Tantric Massage, and whatnot.

At any rate, perhaps the most straightforward term is that of Couples Massage. It means that you as a couple (two persons) will be massaged, usually in the same room lying next to each other, either on a large double-sized massage bed or on two separate massage tables.

However, Couples Massage may be given by only one massage practitioner who synchronically or one after the other massages you and your partner. Couples Massage may also involve two masseurs/masseuses, which means that one practitioner massage you and the other massages your partner.

Four Hands Massage usually means that two massage practitioners will massage one person, most of the time with synchronized moves. In rare occasions, it can also means that two massage practitioners will massage two persons (possibly also in a synchronized fashion), which would then actually make it a Couples Massage. Mind that you sometimes also find Six Hands Massage or even Eight Hands Massage offerings.

Now, Duo Massage can mean one of two things: a massage given to one person by two masseurs/masseuses, which then is a Four Hands Massage, or it can refer to a Couples Massage, the term “duo” referring to the couple. In most cases, the term Duo Massage is used synonymously with the terms Doubles Massage and Tandem Massage, meaning that what counts for the meaning of Duo Massage also counts for Doubles and Tandem Massage.

As you can see in the explanation above, it’s always important to thoroughly read the descriptions of massage offerings to avoid disappointments. If the content of the offering is not unambiguously clear, just contact the massage therapist or the massage establishment and ask for clarification.
