Waifumaxxing or dreammaxxing is about men who — because of loneliness, dating struggles, and involuntary celibacy — focus on building emotional or parasocial relationships with fictional female characters from anime, manga, or video games.

These fictional characters — to whom the waifumaxxer feels romantically or sexually attracted to — are called waifus (singular waifu), which is a Japanese term derived from the English word “wife.”

Today’s modern technology has expanded and intensified these types of relationships through artificial intelligence chatbots (AI chatbots) allowing waifumaxxer to interact with digital representations of their chosen characters.

The practice is considered a form of coping or escapism, that is, being a substitute for real-world romantic or sexual relationships. However, it’s a practice that’s broadly criticized because it would blur the line between fantasy and reality, thereby creating “dissociated and unbalanced” people.

In addition, critics argue that waifumaxxing may deepen loneliness and discourage individuals from pursuing real-world connections.

On the other hand, having a waifu may be a possible temporary solution for those who have experienced trauma during a relationship.

Used in the latter way, waifumaxxing resembles the lifelike, weighted dolls known as reborn dolls, which are often used as a therapeutic aid for women who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. These hyper-realistic dolls can provide comfort and help in their grieving process.
