A sitz bath — also written sitz-bath or sitzbath — involves immersing the lower body parts (typically the legs, buttocks, perineum, lower back, and genital area) in a bathtub filled with warm water, which is often infused with herbs and/or medicated, carrier, and essential oils.
There are many types of herbs and oils that can be used in a sitz bath, each with different properties that provide anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound‑healing, and soothing effects. Think, for instance, of herbs (leaves, roots, and/or bark) and oils from the chamomile, calendula, mint, witch hazel, plantain, eucalyptus, lavender, and tea tree plants or trees.
In addition, it’s also common to use other additives in the bath, such as Epsom salts (reduces swelling, inflammation, and pain) and baking soda (to cleanse, and alleviate itching and irritation).
Herbal sitz baths can offer relief for pelvic discomfort, reduce inflammations, irritations, itching, and pains, provide genital hygiene, soothe hemorrhoids, and support postpartum recovery.
In addition, warm water stimulates the blood circulation in the genital region, which promotes a better delivery of much needed oxygen, nutrients, hormones, etcetera to the testicles.
A warm sitz bath also relaxes the soft tissues in the genital area, and therefore can be used as a means to prepare the testicles for Testicles Massage, Testicle Pumping, and Testicle Stretching, or for any other treatment modality that works with the testicles and/or other the genitals.
In a more general sense, having regular sitz baths can be calming by lowering stress and anxiety, which may improve sexual health and functioning.
However, mind that you should always make sure that you’re not allergic to certain herbs or oils by testing those beforehand on a patch of skin.
