The urethra is a tubular structure in both men and women that connects the urinary bladder to the external environment. The urethra allows for the evacuation of urine. In men, it’s also the pathway for the ejaculation of semen.

In males, the trajectory of the urethra is from the bladder, through the prostate, and along the penis, finally exiting at the glans penis (the head or tip of the penis). In females, the urethra runs from the bladder, passes through the pelvic floor, to reach its exit point in the vestibule of the vulva, just below the clitoris and directly above the vaginal opening.

Urethral Play — technically known as Urethral Sounding — is about inserting objects into the urethra for sexual pleasure. In addition, it may be carried our as a form of control, “punishment,” erotic humiliation, or sadomasochism.

Mind that Urethral Sounding is also a recognized medical procedure, where — in a clinical setting — urologists would perform the procedure under sterile conditions and often while the patient is under anesthesia. It’s typically used as a surgical pathway, to remove foreign bodies that block the tube, or for widening of narrow areas.

In any case, in BDSM, kink, or fetish settings, medical probes are used, made from metal or silicone, which can sometimes even reach the bladder or prostate gland. In fact, for men, Urethral Play often aims for the prostate, while for women it can provide deep clitoral stimulation and massage the G-spot from an internal angle.

Nevertheless, Urethral Play is risky and actually a form of Edge Play, or Medical Play depending on the scene, and may cause health damage, such as irritation, tearing of the urethra, or urinary tract infections.

An extreme form of Urethral Play is Urethral Intercourse, which involves sexual penetration of the female or male urethra by using the penis or a finger instead of objects.
