The rat race refers to making money, acquiring power, and rising in status at the expense of our deeper personal needs and happiness. It’s a metaphor for an endless and often pointless routine that goes on without finding true fulfillment.

It’s a concept derived from laboratory experiments in which rats keep running in a maze for an unattainable piece of cheese or run endlessly on an exercise wheel while staying in the same place. In the case of human beings, it refers to the competitive, continuous, aggressive, stressful, cyclic, and exhausting practice related to work and career.

In fact, people who start earning more money often immediately “improve” their lifestyle (like buying a bigger house, or a new car, etc.), but it makes that their financial gains are consumed by their new expenses.
