Gymmaxxing — or gym maxxing — is part of looksmaxxing practices and involves maximizing activities aimed at achieving a better (more “masculine”) physical appearance (notably of the upper body parts), typically by exercising in a gym.
The idea behind gymmaxxing is to improve one’s feelings of self-esteem and self-worth (sometimes seen as a coping mechanism for one’s lack of success on the sexual or romantic “market”), while it’s also thought that a lean, muscular body is considered more attractive by women, hence increasing one’s chances to finding a date or partner.
By the way, a related term (and practice) is so-called leanmaxxing, which is about considerably reducing excess body fat to attain a highly defined, aesthetic physical appearance and facial structure. Yet, the idea here is to also attain visible muscle definition, which can be maximized by gymmaxxing.
Anyway, apart from actually train and exercise one’s body, consuming appropriate nutrition is also part of gymmaxxing. That is, the right amount and mix of nourishment can support both the growth of muscles and the energetic need of the body to engage in high intensity training.
Moreover, enough rest and sleep to recover, and regularity and self-discipline are additional factors that need to be taken into account to become gymmaxxed.
However, although regularly exercising one’s body is by itself a healthy practice, maximizing (or maxxing) can lead to unhealthy or right-out unsafe practices, like disordered eating, anxiety and stress, overtraining, and misusing certain supplements or anabolic steroids, such as in so-called roidmaxxing.
Having said that, it seems that there are several studies that concluded that upper body strength and aesthetics are highly attractive for women. Therefore, gymmaxxing partly has a research-based motivation and is thought to indeed give improvement in attempts to score a date or finding a sexual or romantic partner.
