Coherent Breathing®| Deep Abdominal Breathing Technique

The Coherent Breathing® method is a Breathwork modality designed by Stephen Elliott. In essence it’s a breathing technique that implicates taking long and slow breaths at a rate of about five to six per minute.

That is, the goal is to extend the length of both the inhale and exhale to around five to six seconds using an Abdominal Breathing technique.

The core idea behind the method is that when you bring your breathing under control and slow it down, everything else that is affected by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) will work in a more favorable way. Typical functions that are under control of the ANS are, for instance, breathing, digestion, blood pressure, blood flow, bladder, and heart rate.

In fact, Coherent Breathing is a deep breathing technique that is thought to help calm the body and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression through its effect on the ANS. The modality and can be practiced as part of Yoga, meditation, or on its own.
