In this post, you’ll find an overview of queer bodywork and massage therapy in Seattle, Washington. Of course, we are aware that not everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community is happy with the word “queer,” but we use it in the sex-positive and respectful way of referring to all transgender, gender-nonconforming, and non-heterosexual people.
However, mind that “queer bodywork and massage” doesn’t involve something completely different when you compare it to regular relaxing or therapeutic massage and bodywork. You will find Shiatsu, Acupuncture, Restorative Yoga, Reflexology, Swedish Massage, and Sports Massage treatment offerings, and whatnot. Nevertheless, LGBT+ informed bodywork typically has some “special” features of which we will talk about here further below.
First of all, queer bodywork and massage sessions are offered by therapists who work LGBTQIA+ Friendly, that is, they welcome LGBTQ+ individuals in their practice with a physically and emotionally safe, client-centered, body-positive, and trauma-aware approach. This is very necessary, because it can be quite difficult for LGBTQ+ clients to find the right massage or bodywork practitioner, that is, one that works in a sex-positive and LGBTQIA+ inclusive fashion.
Secondly, several therapists will have the proficiency to — apart from general, all-purpose massage and bodywork — address LGBTQ+ specific issues, which includes domains such as gender affirming surgery, emotional and sexual trauma release, myofascial release work, consent, sexual dysfunctions and disorders, genital de-armoring, scar tissue remediation, somatic sex education, pelvic release bodywork, breast massage, and jaw and intraoral massage, to name some of the specialties and related concerns.
You will find that quite a number of therapists identify themselves as members of the LGBTQ+ community, but this is certainly not a general rule. You also have plenty of therapists who don’t identify directly as a LGBTQ+ member, but are of course clearly allies of the community who in a more general sense stand for equality, diversity, and inclusivity.
At any rate, below then you’ll find our overview of LGBTQIA+ aware massage and bodywork therapists in the Seattle metropolitan area.
