Jawmaxxing is a subset of facemaxxing, which on its part is again a subcategory of both hard and soft looksmaxxing practices.
Its goal is to try achieving a more defined male jawline and stronger facial structure by engaging in various activities, such as exercises, techniques, and habits, potentially complemented by cosmetic surgeries.
The so-called “perfect male face” — the sought-after chiseled look — should have a sharp jawline, prominent cheekbones, and clear bone structure, as if carved from stone, suggesting attractiveness and strength.
Now, let’s look at the various activities that can be involved in jawmaxxing:
- Chewing hard gum (typically mastic gum, which is a natural, aromatic resin from the mastic tree) to build jaw muscles and attain a more pronounced, chiseled jawline;
- Chewing food properly, especially hard foods, which would have the same effect as regularly chewing hard gum;
- Mewing, a tongue posture/exercise to gradually push the upper jawbone (the maxilla) forward and upwards;
- Facepulling (or thumb pulling), which, like mewing, would move the upper jaw forward and up for a better aesthetic look and improved breathing capacity;
- Mouth taping, which apart from being a sleepmaxxing activity (enforcing nose breathing), is thought to reshape the jaw;
- Neck exercises to strengthen neck muscles to support facial structure;
- Starvemaxxing (highly controversial), which through extreme dieting intents to promote an angular, chiseled facial aesthetic, such as hollow cheeks and hence a better defined jawline;
- Bonesmashing (highly controversial), which involves repeatedly striking the face to cause growth, strength, and reshaping/remodeling of the facial bones,
- Jaw and chin surgeries and implants/fillers to create a chiseled face;
Mind that most of the exercises, techniques, and habits mentioned are not scientifically proven to alter bone structure or provide permanent changes to the jawline.
However, some exercises, such as regularly chewing hard gum, might build some muscle mass, but noteworthy or permanent changes to the underlying bone structure are generally only achievable through surgical or orthodontic interventions.
