With regard to the practice of conscious body awareness, sensory attunement is one of the six body attunement domains and relates to the skin, tongue/mouth, eyes, ears, and nose.

The skin can tell you many things. For instance, itch, dryness, pimples, sensitivity, hot/warm, and cold/cool areas all talk to you.

Reactions of the skin may tell you that you are allergic to some kind of food, or perhaps to a specific brand of washing powder, or a type of fabric.

Different tones or colors of the skin can point to certain internal organ disorders. A warm or hot skin may indicate a fever; a cold skin may tell you that you are suffering from poor blood circulation.

The skin may also tell you if you are sufficiently hydrated or not, if there’s a problem with your digestive or circulatory system, hormonal balance, or perhaps with “waste elimination.”

Watery eyes, blurred vision, red eyes, and so on, may betray that you are tired or that you have overexerted your eyes.

A dry mouth and lips may point to cold weather or weather with low humidity, and it may prompt you to drink some extra fluids. A bitter taste in the mouth may indicate gum disease, tooth decay, poor oral hygiene, or an oral fungal infection.

Hearing sounds like ringing, buzzing, or beeping when there is no external source may point to tinnitus, which can be caused by loud noise, aging, excessive earwax, an ear infection, certain medications, or health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Your ears don’t only hear, they also “talk.”

A running nose or sneezing may indicate that you have an allergy to pollen, dust, or animal hair, but it can also be the result of a viral infection, such as a common cold or flu.

In addition, it may be a reaction to smoke, air pollution, cold and dry air, some types of medication, or even spicy food.

Or, your nose may suddenly and unexpectedly start to bleed, which may indicate dry air or certain medications.

The above are just examples, but as you can see, your senses have many stories to tell. Paying attention to them provides valuable insights into the state of your internal body systems and the ways external influences affect you.
