Ayurvedic Foot Wash | Pada Prakshalana

Pada Prakshalana is an Ayurvedic foot wash (or foot bath), usually carried out in the Dinacharya evening routine, and typically a self-care treatment done just before going to sleep.

Pada means “foot,” and Prakshalana means “washing” or “bathing.” Washing the feet with an herbal decoction helps to remove dirt and various microorganisms on the feet, which, if not cleansed, may result in certain infections.

A foot wash is also refreshing and it’s additionally thought to help gain better vision, because of the Marma pressure points under the foot that address the eyes. As such, an Ayurvedic Foot Massage (Pada Abhyanga), which is also recommended for the evening self-care schedule, is a worthy additional treatment.

Apart from its soothing and therapeutic qualities, giving a foot wash or foot massage holds a special place in Indian culture, where touching, washing, or massaging the feet shows deep respect for elders.
