Myofascial Release (MFR) is a type of massage therapy that identifies and releases restrictions in the fascia (a type of connective tissue in the body) and muscles.

The technique involves applying gentle continuous pressure and stretching to areas of fascial tension to release pressure-exerting fascial restrictions. It’s done without oils or other lubricants.

Abdominal Myofascial Release (AMFR) is a specialized form of MFR that targets the network of fascial tissue of the abdominal wall, the diaphragm, and the lower back. Note that the abdominal wall is the structure of muscles, skin, fascia and other connective tissue that encloses and protects the abdominal cavity and its internal organs.

Abdominal MFR therapies use gentle stretches, pressure/compression, and skin rolling of the abdominal area to soften and break up deep fascial restrictions or surgical scar tissue connected to surrounding muscles and internal organs. This restores elasticity, range of motion, and proper function of internal organs, in addition to releasing tensions and pains.

Overall, AMFR treatments have shown improvement in abdominal pain and tension, back and hip pain, mobility, flexibility, distension, digestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, and overall quality of life.

In addition, patients often experience a profound sense of relaxation and/or emotional release during treatments because the abdomen holds a high concentration of nerve pathways linked to the sympathetic nervous system.
