Apart from surgical options or alternatively Hormone Replacement Therapy to create larger breasts, hips and/or buttocks, padding is a nonsurgical, cheap, and painless technique to create a different shape and/or larger appearance.

To give an appearance of larger breasts one can use inserts (pads) for bras and breast forms, which are usually made from fabric or from silicone. They can vary considerably in size, and are used, for instance, to help push-up breast tissue, fill a bra cup entirely, or simply to simulate breasts.

People of all genders may use breast forms or bra inserts. They may be removable objects or — by contrast — permanent (in this case surgically implanted).

Reasons to engage in breast padding include Gender Affirmation for transgender women, reduction of Gender Dysphoria, simulation of breasts that have been surgically removed, appearing to have larger breasts, creating an increased feminine appearance, feeling more comfortable in one’s clothing, or cross-dressing (drag artistry), to give some examples.

To give an appearance of larger hips or buttocks, one can use padded panties which make hips look wider and buttocks fuller. Motives of hips and buttocks padding may include Gender Affirmation for transgender women, a means to make female clothing appear and move appropriately, or drag artistry.
