Whitemaxxing is a controversial and racially-charged practice — a form of looksmaxxing — carried out by non-white persons.
In the context of male maxxing to escape involuntary celibacy, it involves altering one’s appearance or identity to appear more white (as in “white people”), and thus, apparently becoming more attractive and desirable to women.
The idea behind whitemaxxing — sometimes also called ethnicmaxxing — is that “whiteness” is the most desirable racial characteristic to gain maximized “sexual market value” and greater success in the dating market.
Techniques and methods involved include a broad variety of practices, including skin bleaching, cosmetic surgery such as nose jobs (rhinoplasty) and lip size reduction, avoiding sunlight to maintain a lighter skin, dying hair with a lighter color, changing one’s name in a way that suggests that one has a “white” background, lying about one’s ethnicity, and/or wearing light-colored contact lenses.
Mind that the practice of whitemaxxing is widely criticized for promoting Caucasian i.e., Eurocentric beauty standards and for contributing to serious health issues such as body dysmorphia and eating disorders.
A common counter-critique is that many people with lighter skin tones desire a tan (sometimes called tanmaxxing, which likewise carries considerable health risks), so why should people with darker skin tones not seek to become lighter?
In addition, it’s also thought that Non-Caucasian persons who consider whitening, not necessarily want to become a white person, just as white people don’t necessarily want to become a member of the Non-Caucasian race.
In any case, the pros, cons, and ethics involved are a subject of ongoing debate, but it simply remains a fact that both “darkening” and “whitening” are widely practiced by people across many countries and cultures around the world.
However, apart from whitemaxxing in the sense mentioned above, it’s also practiced for other motives. For instance, it may involve improving one’s appearance by removing or reversing skin stains, impurities, or pigmentation changes caused by aging, dieting, or sun exposure, while remaining unrelated to “racial whitening.”
Furthermore, whitening may also refer to lightening the teeth to enhance attractiveness. Teeth whitening typically targets stains caused by coffee, tobacco, or aging.
