What is this Book about?
Sounds and silence can have a profound impact on our lives. Notably in current times, with an increasing world population, densely packed cities, noise pollution, addictive smartphone apps, and busy schedules perhaps even more than ever.
In this book, we discuss the effects of sounds and silence on people, and additionally we take a look at various treatments, practices, and activities that incorporate sounds and/or silence to improve physical, psychological, and spiritual health and wellbeing.
I’d like to conclude this book introduction with a quote from Andre Kostelanetz (1901 – 1980), a music conductor and arranger who was one of the major exponents of popular orchestra music.
“We listen too much to the telephone and we listen too little to Nature. The wind is one of my sounds. A lonely sound, perhaps, but soothing. Everybody should have his personal sounds to listen for — sounds that will make him exhilarated and alive, or quiet and calm. As a matter of fact, one of the greatest sounds of them all — and to me it is a sound — is utter, complete silence.”
